Contiguous Urbanism
BRIEF

Perungalathur, a key junction on the GST corridor, suffers from intense transit pressure driven by extreme congestion, fragmented public infrastructure, and poor environmental health. The arterial highway acts as an invisible wall, disconnecting neighborhoods from vital ecological assets like the Perungalathur Lake. Traffic surveys reveal staggering volumes of over 2,000 vehicles in just 15 minutes during peak hours, while pedestrians remain marginalized in unsafe, polluted streets. The lack of structured public transit systems and the sprawl of informal uses intensify conflicts between vehicles and people. The design vision addresses these challenges by transforming the junction into a layered transit hub and ecological connector. Elevated public spaces, integrated bus systems with last-mile connectivity, and underpass levels segregated by vehicle speed reconfigure mobility flows. Complementary vegetation strategies—median tree planting, bridge planters, and green buffers—enhance air quality, mitigate noise, and improve drainage. Together, these interventions aim to regenerate Perungalathur into a breathable, connected, and inclusive urban landscape.
