Post-harvest grain loss in India wastes nearly 40% of harvests due to inadequate storage and poor market connectivity, affecting over 130 million smallholder farmers with less than two hectares of land. As part of the MITdesignX course, we developed Grain Box, a systems-based business model with two core components: a decentralized network of hermetic warehouses for pest- and moisture-free storage, and a digital marketplace linking farmers directly to verified wholesale buyers. Through a simple three-step process—register via mobile app or local warehouse, receive free grain quality checks and 24-hour storage approval (with optional loan credits), and sell to preferred buyers at transparent prices—farmers gain agency and fair market access. Grounded in safety, affordability, accountability, accessibility, and awareness, the model is sustained through minimal storage fees and buyer commissions. Grain Box has the potential to scale into remote villages, safeguard livelihoods, and cut losses, contributing to a more food-secure India.
