Athangudi, India
The Chettinad region of Tamil Nadu, architecturally renowned for Athangudi tiles, palatial houses, and intricate carpentry traditions, stands as a living repository of vernacular heritage. Despite attracting nearly 100 tourists daily, its cultural richness lacks a global platform. This project proposes an information center at the village core, its form derived from the spatial grammar of Chettinad houses. Timber doors, carved columns, egg plaster, and Athangudi tiles reinterpret tradition into a contemporary space. Beyond static exhibits, immersive narratives of architecture, craft, and community unfold. An observation tower extends this vision, offering panoramic views and reframing the village as both lived and observed landscape.
