Measuring Rurals
BRIEF

A week-long measured drawing and ethnographic study was undertaken in Athangudi, a Chettinad village renowned for its palatial houses, Athangudi tiles, and intricate timber work. Through participatory discussions with residents, we traced settlement patterns shaped by various communities, documenting their architecture, crafts, and socio-cultural practices. Climatic data, soil conditions, and water systems were also recorded to contextualize material choices. The findings were synthesized into panels supported by scaled drawings, analytical diagrams, and sketches, capturing both tangible details of construction and the intangible cultural narratives that sustain Athangudi’s unique architectural and social fabric.
