Taksim Square, long inscribed with layers of history, politics, and collective memory, remains Istanbul’s most symbolic public space—a stage for everyday life and socio-political expression. The proposal envisions Taksim as a “common ground” weaving plaza, park, and street into a seamless urban surface. Its core concept, “Particles and Clouds,” combines static infrastructural objects for edges, seating, lighting, wayfinding, and services with dynamic, responsive installations that react to climate, events, and collective moods. Technical strategies strengthen this framework: porous paving and sponge basins mitigate stormwater, shaded walkways and tree clusters improve microclimate, and permeable green roofs reduce heat-island effects. A two-way cycle track, transit-integrated pedestrian loop, and timed traffic management prioritize sustainable mobility, while smart lighting and safe crossings enhance night use. Modular street furniture, adaptable pavilions, and integrated service nodes ensure flexible programming. Together, these measures position Taksim as an adaptive, inclusive urban commons where memory, sustainability, and democracy converge.
